Ice Cream Alert!
My son received a gift card for his volunteer efforts this year to a fancy ice cream parlor in the city – Made by Marcus. I had heard good things about it – all natural, fresh, local in season ingredients, and famous for its wildly imaginative flavors made from scratch. So the other night when the rest of the family was out and it was just the two of us, we decided to have a little date together and try out this ice cream shop. It was a beautiful night and when we arrived the lineup for ice cream stretched around the building – a good sign. Eventually we got inside and to the ice cream counter where he placed his order. My son decided on a scoop of toasted hay and saskatoon berry ice cream. Seemed like a daring but interesting choice to me. The employee asked if he had any allergies (which we both assumed were to foods) to which he said no. As we exited the store he was eager to begin delving into his dish of ice cream quickly placing a spoonful in his mouth and just as he did I heard him say very emphatically, “really, seriously mom?!”. Surprised I asked him what was the matter to which he promptly passed me his bowl of ice cream. As I raised the spoonful of deliciousness to my lips I smelled a barn – like odor and as I swallowed the ice cream a distasteful flavor of what one might expect hay to taste like flooded my taste buds. It was honestly dreadful! Not wanting to complain or be wasteful my son tried to pretend he enjoyed the ice cream commenting on its uniqueness but clearly he was not enjoying it! Much more concerning was that with each mouthful his throat was feeling more constricted, his eyes began to itch, and his nose was running. He was having a full on allergic reaction!! Yes, he is asthmatic and allergic to horses and animal fur, but when asked about allergies as the employee scooped up the ice cream we never thought to mention that!!!! The “toasted hay“ in his ice cream (from the taste of things and by his allergic reaction) must have been real hay and have come from a horse barn or touched by furry farm animals. Who knew that when you go to a fancy ice cream parlor that you need to mention all your allergies (grass, dust, smoke, horses…) before ordering!
Needless to say our date was cut short and was a bit of a disaster. We threw out the ice cream, I gave him medication, and put him to bed!!! As I kissed him good night we chuckled a bit about our experience. I made a few horse neighs and trotted out of his room as I closed his door! He was better in the morning and we both decided to order vanilla ice cream next time but we’ll have to find a different ice cream shop for that. After all vanilla flavored ice cream is way too boring!!!
