Parallel Parking
In the next couple of weeks my 3 teenage boys take to the streets as independently licensed drivers! I have been talking myself into this now for months leading up to it knowing that it was inevitable. I truly hope we all survive this right of passage. We have the “junker” and the brakes are working again so that’s positive! But the reality is that we have only one car that has to be shared amongst all three of them on a rotating basis – should be interesting. I’m letting them sort out how it’s all going to work, at least the initial discussions, like whether weekends can be traded for weekdays for equal value, who pays for the gas, curfew time ….. well, you see where this is going!! I have a feeling it may be much like girls sorting out who gets to wear the one pretty blouse on Saturday night for the double date. I’m bracing for this next step towards independence with a lot of fear and trepidation but it’s now or later!!
In preparation I have spent hours in the passenger seat honing their skills of parallel parking; watching many a bumper almost graze the red paint of our bumper. I’d have to say that over the years I’ve taught many things but parallel parking has definitely been one of the most difficult. Together we’ve listened to a number of YouTube’s, I’ve asked numerous friends for tips, and even complete strangers passing by on the street have tried to impart their wisdom as we struggled to squeeze properly into that spot. Heck, I even shared my old fashioned method of doing it but was quickly informed that it was both outdated and of no use?!!!! (not sure how it would change? Isn’t parallel parking still parallel parking?!!!?).
Through it all I’ve come to a couple conclusions: parallel parking is a skill where you have to find your own way of doing it and Mothers should not teach their boys how to drive!!
P.S.
Stay clear of any red Honda’s!!
