House of Gucci
Can’t remember a time I last went to a movie. Been years. Just like my Mother, I always fall asleep so why bother?! However, I recently was invited out to the movies – The House of Gucci. The movie is based upon the true story of the Gucci empire which I have to say I knew virtually nothing about. I wasn’t too optimistic that I’d enjoy the movie let alone stay awake! On both accounts I surprised myself. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Between the beautiful Tuscan scenery of Italy, great music, intriguing story line, and exceptionally talented acting, I was hooked from the outset. While the recount of the story may not completely satisfy the disgruntled heirs of Gucci, the common themes of the movie and the overall account of the rise and fall of the Gucci empire cannot be disputed. The collapse of the Gucci empire was from within. Family relationships severed by greed, fame, power, and success. Clearly one by one, family members became swallowed up by the Gucci brand, it’s wealth, and popularity. Soon humble beginnings of a family built business and valued relationships were forgotten, discarded, and even turned against each other in pursuit of prestige and wealth. They become traitors to the very ones who loved them most and were alongside them in the beginning building stages of the Gucci brand. Sadly, in the end, despite the Gucci empire being worth a whopping $15.6 billion US today, not a single Gucci heir operates the company or owns one share in the company to this day. Ironically, one of the heirs died of poverty in London in 1997.
Movies have a way of mirroring back to us lived experiences and lessons from our own life. The influence wealth, power, and success can have on others is truly transforming. Turning family against family and friend into foe. I once heard someone say that the real measure of someone’s wealth is how much they’d be worth if they lost it all. I have a feeling what would remain is true authentic love.
To me that’s priceless.
