Homemade Fruit Fly Traps
I’ve been asked many times over the years what it’s like being a mom of three boys. I think my answer is always the same: never dull and full of surprises! The other day I began noticing fruit flies flitting about upstairs and downstairs in the house. They seemed to multiply before my very eyes and soon I found myself swatting at them and having to keep them off the food in the kitchen. A battle was brewing as these tiny fruit flies began taking up residence. I started looking around the house for the source searching the most obvious of places- the boys bedrooms. Wasn’t long before I found half empty slurpee cups and melon rinds which to the delight of the fruit flies they were feasting on! Not too happy about the source of the problem I enlisted the boys in creating a solution. Never short on creativity and inventiveness they quickly got to work making a fruit fly trapping contraption. The first chamber contained vinegar and baking soda creating a chemical reaction. A straw connecting chamber one and two together transported the carbon dioxide to chamber two where delicious fruit was placed for the fruit flies to feast upon. Finally ending in the third compartment with a water bubbler to catch any escapees. Their clever creation seemed to be working but I thought I’d have to join in with some fun competition. I sacrificed an inch of my red wine and placed it on the counter to see whose trap would catch the most. Both worked well however mine scored zero points for creativity and inventiveness:( Good news is that for now we seem to have reclaimed our home and kicked out our unwanted guests.
