When Is It Best?
It’s long been a debate over the best time to exercise. Be it the early risers, the late-night exercisers, or those mid day lunch breakers, a case can be made for each one as being the “best” time. The simple truth is that the “best” time to work out is whenever you can do it!! We’re all strapped for time with jam-packed schedules but even the busiest people can exercise regularly if they are motivated and are both creative and flexible with the when and how. Barack Obama at the peak of his campaign would hit the gym with his security in tow before 6am. Key is to find a sweat schedule that works for you and then set aside that time as your daily personal wellness appointment to keep it a consistent priority in your life. Schedule workouts as you would any other important activity.
For me, first thing in the morning is the best time. I guard that time and do not schedule anything other than my workout; giving myself permission to prioritize self-care behaviours like exercise. Doing physical activity regularly and planning for it helps make it a sustainable behaviour. I feel I’m getting more and more successful at keeping exercise as a priority because I see how beneficial and valuable it is to my daily life. It sets me up for the rest of my day. After exercising I feel energized, recharged, and ready to tackle the day. If I wait to later, the day’s busyness creeps in, I’m too tired, and a myriad of other distractions prevent me from getting it done. And finally, I do not allow more than four days to pass after my last session with the exception of illness, injury, or a family emergency. Anymore time lapse than this and I’m a goner!!!
